Systems engineering is an interdisciplinary field of engineering and management that addresses the analysis, design, implementation, operation, maintenance and retirement of systems. These systems often involve human and robot interactions and integration, management of complex systems over their lifecycles and retirement or disposal of systems. Systems engineering uses systems thinking, mathematical analysis and optimization models, simulation techniques, and risk management and mitigation.

Other systems engineering programs focus on engineering disciplines such as design, industrial, manufacturing, software or management. 

The MSSE is created such that the content for professional certification is built into the course. Students will spend 16 weeks learning and studying the bodies of knowledge with faculty members. Quizzes and exams are delivered in similar testing environments and semester projects reflect applications of this knowledge, in preparation for the Certified Systems Engineering Professional (CSEP) exam offered by the International Council on Systems Engineering (INCOSE). 

WSU is continuously upgrading and fine-tuning technology being used in the classroom to ensure opportunities for success. Students that are enrolled in the WSU MSSE program are able to immediately apply industry-relevant knowledge and skills, expand professional connections, have a leg-up in salary negotiations, better career opportunities and more. The program is also 100% HyFlex, meaning an individual student can choose how to attend class on any given day — online synchronously or online asynchronously. This enables students that travel for work, who are sick, have busy work schedules or have growing families, to choose their learning modality. Using HyFlex, those enrolled are able to meet at set times to receive instruction via web conferencing, to have the option to watch the recorded online instruction and to submit assignments via the online course webpage.
