IDI Composites International (Noblesville, Ind., U.S.) is introducing a new sheet molding compound (SMC) for the electric vehicle market. Engineered to pass the rigorous “China Bonfire Test,” the FlamEVEX SMC is a sheet molding compound that is said to deliver critical performance benefits for the electric vehicle battery enclosure market. IDI said EV and AFV designers have long faced the dilemma of balancing dimensional strength, storage space and high-temperature requirements when developing battery enclosure solutions. As battery packs take up significant space in vehicle designs and must offer both strength and resistance to high temperatures, the new material is said to provide a more flexible option, imposing a lower weight and cost burden.
