Radius Engineering Inc. (Salt Lake City, Utah, U.S.) has developed Insights, a proprietary software platform integrated with its composites processing equipment to enhance automation and process control. Available as part of turnkey workcells, upgraded Injection System HMIs and custom integration solutions, Insights improves resin transfer molding (RTM) and same-qualified RTM (SQRTM) processes by automating critical functions such as vacuum leak checks, hydrostatic holds, cure holds and resin degassing verification. This reduces human error, increases process consistency and lowers operator training requirements through recipe-driven cycle controls.

Insights for RTM Workcells enables manufacturing engineers to define the RTM/SQRTM cycle using an Excel-based recipe template. Production operators select the cycle and enter part serial numbers for traceability. The system then automatically performs most critical tasks while providing real-time feedback to operators who are able to simply monitor the cycle status with minimal direct involvement. When manual actions are needed, on-screen prompts and machine lighting guide operators before advancing the process.

Insights for Injectors is delivered via an embedded panel PC, eliminating the need for a separate PC cart and streamlining workflow. Operators receive prompts during resin preparation and plumbing connections, while the control system validates task completion. When combined with turnkey workcells or integrated systems, Insights ensures all preparation steps are completed before infusion begins.

Insights for Integration offers traceability, data collection and automation tools previously limited to turnkey workcells. The software is delivered on an industrial PC and paired with a configurable PLC rack to manage temperature control units, chilled water systems, vacuum systems and automated tool valves, supporting a wider range of applications requiring stringent process control.

Radius continually develops new software modules and improvements across all Insights versions to boost efficiency. For example, the maintenance module tracks component cycle counts, total run time and alarm history, enabling predictive maintenance rather than reactive service. Data collected by Insights can upload to facility networks for further analysis by maintenance teams, manufacturing engineers or Radius’ service team under annual agreements.

By standardizing equipment with the Insights platform, Radius ensures ongoing software enhancements benefit all customers, and improvements to automation capabilities in both new and existing equipment.
