Concordia Engineered Fibers (Coventry, R.I., U.S.) presents semipreg commingled thermoplastic towpreg to CAMX 2025 attendees. The company offers a long history in advanced twisting, precision winding and yarn conversion, with manufacturing facilities in France and Mexico and headquarters in Rhode Island advancing its international footprint.

While Concordia continues to concentrate on twisting and plying carbon fiber for 3D woven preforms, carbon/carbon (C/C) applications and carbon sewing thread, this expertise only contributes to the expansion of capability in processing continuous filaments. Concordia’s continuous tow, containing customized ratios of reinforcement fibers with thermoplastic fibers, produces flexible thermoplastic prepregs especially designed for use in advanced thermoplastic composites. As an ISO 9001-certified company, Concordia has long prided itself on the variety of industrial, sporting goods and aerospace applications that have used its converted textiles.

Semipreg commingled thermoplastic towpreg is a semi-consolidated towpreg that has been developed to be a steerable, lower-bulk continuous fiber material format that enables a very accurate and uniform ply buildup or flexible fabric. This is an innovation that reduces the bulk of the commingled towpreg while maintaining a more flexible tow than fully consolidated prepreg. Additionally, the semipreg provides more protection to the tow while it is being processed in downstream applications. Compared to slit tape tow, which relies on constant thickness, Concordia says the semipreg is a constant cross-section. This enables accurate placement of material while laying up parts or creating a fabric.

Semipreg commingled thermoplastic towpreg is an input material well suited for weaving, braiding, tailored fiber placement (TFP), automated fiber placement (AFP), additive manufacturing, pultrusion and filament winding. High-performance parts will benefit from this material. Semipreg commingled thermoplastic towpreg is easily recyclable, remoldable and leads to less waste within processes.

As sustainability has emerged as a pressing concern and composite focus, Concordia has strived to integrate more sustainable fiber inputs, as well as highlight the sustainable nature inherent in thermoplastics. All commingled input options are available in the new semipreg commingled thermoplastic towpreg
