High-precision gear pump manufacturer (Derby, U.K.) is spotlighting its resin metering solutions and highlight how they are being used to improve fiber-to-resin control, boost process efficiency and reduce waste in the manufacture of composite materials and parts.
The company is exhibiting alongside Composites UK at the UK Pavillion, where on display are gear pump designs offering improved accuracy in fluid mixing, flow and application of resins and polymers. The company is illustrating how its technologies are helping manufacturers to develop lighter, stronger composite materials and parts, accurately, repeatably, and at high volumes and production speeds.
Attendees can also discover how the company’s bespoke gear pumps can be customized to the exact requirements of the application and to handle the most challenging materials, from very low viscosity polymers processed under high pressure to fast-cure resins that require in-line mixing and high-speed application.
Slack & Parr has been delivering high-precision gear metering pumps into the global materials market for more than 80 years. The company suppliers gear metering pumps for the production of polyacrylonitrile (PAN) precursor and its technologies are used in many composites manufacturing processes including coating, prepreg, filament winding and spraying, as well as in extruder-based processes most commonly used in the manufacture of thermoplastic composites.
“The way in which resins are delivered into the manufacturing line has a fundamental impact on the characteristics and performance of the finished material or part,” says Slack & Parr’s industrial director, Neil Anderton. “When we control the speed and rate at which resins are applied to fibers or materials using a purpose-engineered metering pump, we can achieve extremely accurate fiber-to-resin ratios with overall accuracy greater than 99%. By applying the right amount of resin onto the fiber, we can make the process cleaner and less wasteful while achieving a better end product.”
Slack & Parr says its gear pumps are engineered with high levels of precision. They are built around hardened steel involute gears which are machined to precise tolerances of 1-2 µm, ensuring almost no internal slip even at high pressures. Each Slack & Parr pump is made up of at least three individual, precision-engineered plates which create a metal-to-metal seal when assembled. This method of manufacture ensures highly accurate dimensional control of the internal components which the company notes leads to optimum accuracy and repeatability of flow.
