(Sonae, Maia, Portugal) has completed the acquisition of a majority stake in (Canelas), a Portuguese company specializing in the development and manufacturing of advanced composite materials. This investment is in line with Sonae’s strategy of investing in companies with innovative and sustainable technologies, thus providing BeyondComposite with the necessary resources to accelerate its growth strategy in Portugal and abroad.
Founded by researchers from University of Minho, BeyondComposite develops solutions for mobility applications, such as components for buses and trains, as well as for defense. Through partnerships with national and international companies and associations, BeyondComposite has been able to achieve solutions that drive environmental sustainability and enhance performance efficiency. The company’s approach integrates sustainable materials — such as wood and its derivatives — with high-performance polymers.
“We are dedicated to supporting innovative and sustainable businesses, building industry-leading companies across their respective sectors,” says Miguel Gil Mata, Sonae Capital Industrials CEO. “This investment will empower BeyondComposite to accelerate its growth strategy, expanding its innovative solutions to an ever-growing global customer base. Furthermore, it enhances our portfolio with a high-potential company that has the expertise and capabilities to transform the advanced composite materials industry.”
BeyondComposite currently has a team of 20 employees, including an R&D team. In 2024, 90% of the company sales came from international markets. The company expects to leverage Sonae’s resources and expertise through this acquisition. BeyondComposite already has a partnership with Surforma, a group company specializing in thermolaminated panels, in which the two companies will collaborate to explore synergies and develop more sustainable solutions.
Sonae’s portfolio of industrial and technology-driven companies focuses on key verticals such as energy transition and the circular economy.
