The wind energy market has long been considered the world’s largest market, by volume, for glass fiber-reinforced polymer (GFRP) composites — and increasingly, carbon fiber composites — as larger turbines and longer wind blades are developed, requiring higher performance, lighter weight materials. The outer skins of wind and tidal turbine blades generally comprise infused, GFRP laminates sandwiching foam core. Inside the blade, rib-like shear webs bonded to spar caps reinforce the structure. Spar caps are often made from GFRP or, as blade lengths lengthen, pultruded carbon fiber for additional strength.
DONG Energy takes over US offshore wind project, U.S. homeowners show bipartisan support for wind and corporations buy in as cost of wind drops 50% over five years.
The European Space Agency has selected OBH System AG as industrial prime contractor to negotiate the implementation of its PLATO satellite, which will detect and conduct research into exoplanets.
DOE report includes more than 60 actions to enhance supply chain resiliency — referencing composites and wind recycling — spur domestic manufacturing capacity and create U.S. jobs.
The JEC World trade show and conference, the largest composites event in the world, will be held at the Paris Nord Villepinte Exhibition Center, March 12-14, 2019.
Hundreds of offshore turbines will be installed in Europe and Asia, but the U.S. falls behind waiting on a green light from the government.
Electric-powered flight is nascent, but the promise is real, as is the opportunity for composites fabricators and suppliers.
The Orion crew module capsule is for NASA Exploration Mission-2 (EM-2), which is designed to return astronauts to the moon, and beyond.
Proving its mettle at controlled, powered flight on Mars, Ingenuity’s transition to an operations demonstration phase will bring a new flight envelope, and perform aerial observations for future missions.
