AGY single-end S2 Glass enhances fiberglass design versatility

Proving better performance than traditional E-glass, S2 Glass roving overcomes traditional limitations in radar transparency, strength and stiffness, ballistic and impact resistance and other properties.

AGY (Aiken, S.C., U.S.) a producer of high-performance glass fiber reinforcement, announces the development and commercial launch of its single-end S2 Glass roving, engineered to deliver high strength, stiffness and impact resistance for advanced composite applications — including aerospace, defense and high-performance industrial markets.

Single-end S2 Glass roving offers improved performance over traditional E-glass; AGY has performed studies that show significant performance gains in stiffness, strength and impact, especially in weight-sensitive or survivability-critical applications. The single-end format also enables thinner, lighter and more versatile laminate design and AGY’s sizing chemistry system ensures optimal fiber-matrix bonding.

Optimized for use in unidirectional (UD) prepreg and noncrimp fabric (NCF) manufacturing, this single-end format delivers optimal mechanical properties compared to traditional assembled rovings. With performance comparable to competitive thin-ply laminates, it enables high fiber volume and low-matrix formulations, optimizing impact resistance and energy absorption. S2 Glass also features 15-20% lower dielectric constant than E-Glass, improving radar transparency capabilities like applications like radomes, and it achieves high operating temperatures, increased fatigue life and electrical isolation for high-performance electric motor applications.

Supplied on 3" cores, the standard for industry fiber processing, this roving is compatible with existing composite production processes. Packages are designed for seamless UD and NCF integration.
